Wind Energy Market USA: RWE Commissions 200 Megawatt Onshore Wind Farm In South Texas

Essen, Germany - Essen-based energy company RWE has commissioned another onshore wind farm in the USA.

At the site of the 200-megawatt (MW) El Algodon Alto project near the coast in San Patricio County in South Texas, 91 Vestas turbines were installed. According to RWE, the wind farm can meet the electricity needs of 60,000 households. El Algodon Alto brings RWE's total installed capacity on the Texas grid to 3,700 MW, of which more than 1,700 MW are on the Texas coast.

The US is currently playing a key role in the implementation of RWE's strategy to expand its renewables business and become carbon neutral by 2040. In this context, RWE is pushing ahead with its expansion plans not only in the areas of onshore wind, solar PV and storage, but also in offshore wind. At the end of February 2022, RWE and its joint venture partner National Grid Ventures secured an area in the offshore lease auction in the New York Bight in the USA on which an offshore wind farm with a gross capacity of around 3,000 MW can be realised. Furthermore, RWE has a stake in the New England Aqua Ventus joint venture, which focuses on the construction of floating offshore wind farms in the state of Maine.

As part of its "Growing Green" investment and growth strategy, RWE announced in November 2021 that it would be stepping up the pace of expansion in green generation capacity. To this end, RWE plans to invest €50 billion gross by 2030 and expand its generation capacity to 50 gigawatts (50,000 MW). This means that an average of 5 billion euros gross per year will flow into offshore and onshore wind power, solar, storage, flexible backup capacities and hydrogen.
