US Offshore Wind Farm Vineyard Wind Starts Cable Installations

New Bedford, USA - The 800 MW Vineyard Wind offshore wind farm is being built off the east coast of the USA. Vineyard Wind is now starting offshore cable installations for the first commercial offshore wind farm in the US.

Vineyard Wind also announced that it will begin nearshore cable work off the south coast of Cape Cod in the coming days. The work will be performed by Prysmian Group, the global leader in subsea cable manufacturing and installation. Prysmian recently announced plans to build the first U.S. offshore wind subsea cable factory in Somerset, Massachusetts, to expand its strong North American presence with 28 manufacturing facilities.

Cable installation will take place in both the fall of 2022 and early 2023. The wind farm is then expected to be operational next year in 2023, delivering clean energy to Massachusetts. Construction began in late 2021.

The Vineyard Wind offshore wind farm, with about 800 MW of capacity, is located 15 miles off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. 62 Haliade -X 13 MW wind turbines from GE Renewable Energy will be installed. The wind farm is expected to generate electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at one time. It will also create 3600 full-time equivalent jobs and save customers more than $1.4 billion, Vineyard Wind announced. CO₂ emissions are expected to be reduced by more than 1.6 million tons per year in the first 20 years of operation.

Vineyard Wind is an offshore wind development company building the first commercial offshore wind energy project in the United States. Based in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Vineyard Wind 1 is 50 percent owned by funds from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and 50 percent owned by Avangrid, Inc.
