Office Building With The Highest Sustainability Standards: RWE Starts Construction of New Offshore Wind Control Centre in East Frisia

Essen, Germany - The Essen-based energy company and offshore specialist RWE has heralded the start of the construction phase of a new office building in the municipality of Jemgum in the district of Leer in East Frisia with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony.

RWE's existing and future offshore wind farms in Germany and continental Europe will soon be monitored and controlled around the clock from Jemgum. The building is being constructed by Real Immobilien GmbH on an area of around 4,700 square metres. RWE intends to lease the new building on a long-term basis.

Subject to approval being granted, construction of the building is due to start in the coming weeks. The actual construction work is scheduled for completion in the autumn, after which the interior of the offices and the technical equipment for the control room will be installed. The new offshore wind control centre should be ready for use in spring 2026.

The two-storey building is designed according to the highest sustainability standards. For example, recycled materials will be used and attention will be paid to energy-optimised construction. There are also plans to use renewable energies for the electricity and heat supply as well as measures to save water. The aim is to achieve certification in accordance with the ‘Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings’ (QNG) of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building.

Modern office space, meeting rooms and the actual control room will be created on two floors with a total of around 1,120 square metres. In future, ship movements, for example, as well as the wind turbines themselves and electrical equipment such as transformer stations will be monitored from here. In the first phase, around 50 RWE employees will work in the office building.

Large common rooms with kitchenettes and a fitness room are also planned. Green spaces and a conservatory will invite employees to relax during their breaks. There will be around 50 car parking spaces in front of the building as well as charging points for electric cars and parking spaces for bicycles.

RWE is one of the world's leading players in the offshore wind sector. Over the past 20 years or so, the company has commissioned 19 offshore wind farms. And the expansion continues. For example, with the offshore wind farm project North Sea Cluster A (660 MW) and B (900 MW) north of the island of Juist. Among other things, preparatory work is currently underway to start constructing the foundations at sea in the first project section, North Sea Cluster A. The new building in Jemgum will also serve as the project office for the operation of the Nordseecluster wind farm complex.
