Wind Energy On The Upswing In Finland - Nordex Receives Major Order For Wind Farms

Hamburg, Germany - The use of wind energy in Finland will reach a new record year in 2021. Nordex is also benefiting from this ongoing dynamic development. Valorem, the independent French operator of renewable energy systems, has awarded the wind turbine manufacturer a major order for 57 wind turbines.

Numerous large wind farm projects are currently being implemented in Finland. The "Kalistanneva" and "Matkussaari" wind farms to be supplied by Nordex, with a total capacity of over 313.5 MW, are part of the larger Viiatti project.

Nordex to supply "Kalistanneva" and "Matkussaari" wind farms

For the Finnish wind farm "Kalistanneva", 30 turbines of the type N163/5.X of the Delta4000 series are planned. The wind farm has been sold by Valorem to a Finnish consortium consisting of Helen Oy and the Wind Power Fund of the Bank of Ålands.

For the "Matkussaari" wind farm, the Nordex Group is supplying a further 27 turbines of the same turbine type. Here, AIP Management is providing flexible, long-term financing in partnership with Valorem. Valorem developed the wind farm and will build and operate it. Both wind farms are being built in the Österbotten landscape, the region located in western Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia.

One billion kilowatt hours of wind power per year

The "Kalistanneva" and "Matkussaari" wind farms are part of the larger Viiatti project, one of the five largest wind farms currently under construction in Finland. According to Nordex, infrastructure work will start in spring 2022. The turbines, each with a capacity of 5.5 MW, will be delivered in 2024 on tubular steel towers with a hub height of 148 meters and will be installed in the cold climate variant. Upon completion, both wind farms will generate approximately 1 billion kWh of clean electricity, equivalent to just over 1.2 percent of Finland's annual electricity consumption.

About the use of wind energy in Finland

In 2021, a record number of new wind turbines were built in Finland. A total of 141 new wind farms with a wind power capacity of 671 MW were newly built last year. This brings the total wind power capacity in Finland to 3,257 MW, according to the Finnish Wind Power Association. Electricity production from wind reached about 8 billion kWh, or 11.7 percent of Finland's electricity consumption.

“Fewer wind power plant were completed in 2021 than expected, as some of the projects were delayed and the wind power plants will not be officially taken into use until 2022. The reasons for the delays were, among other things, challenges related to the corona virus pandemic, which affected the availability of labor and supplies. Yet 2021 was a record year for the construction of new wind farms. The previous record year was 2017”, says Anni Mikkonen, CEO of the Finnish Wind Power Association.
