Milestone: Baywa Applies For Approval For Portugal's First Commercial Floating Offshore Wind Farm
Munich, Germany - Baywa r.e. has entered the decisive phase of the official approval process in Portugal for the country's first commercial floating offshore wind farm.
This has been preceded by discussions and consultations with the Portuguese government and all local stakeholders.
The project is compatible with the planned offshore wind energy tenders recently announced in Portugal and, according to Baywa r.e., can serve as a blueprint for tendering projects.
Baywa r.e. wants to support the establishment of a global supply chain for floating offshore wind turbines in Portugal, using the existing local infrastructure which can then also be used in the tender projects. In addition, the project is to be realised under a power purchase agreement (PPA) without public support.
"Our project will be a real milestone for the Portuguese Offshore industry. We have been working hard with our industrial partners and all the stakeholders during the development process. Now is the time to take it to the next level," says Ricardo Rocha, Technical Director Offshore Wind at Baywa r .e..
Baywa r.e. has already been successful in comparable projects. For example, the company was awarded the rights to develop the 960 MW Buchan offshore project off the north-east coast of Scotland. Baywa r.e. has also pre-qualified for two floating wind energy projects in France, including a 250 MW project in southern Brittany, as well as two projects in the Mediterranean with a total capacity of 500 MW.
