Project Progress: RWE Selects Preferred Suppliers For Denmark's Largest Offshore Wind Farm

Copenhagen, Denmark - RWE is moving ahead with the construction of its Danish offshore wind farm Thor. The energy company has now selected two preferred suppliers for the power transmission system and signed early construction agreements with them.

RWE will build the Thor wind farm, which is scheduled to be commissioned by 2027 at the latest, some 22 kilometres from Thorsminde off the west coast of Jutland. With a planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), Thor will be Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date. To connect the wind farm to the Danish electricity grid, RWE will build two new substations - one offshore and one onshore.

Siemens Energy has been awarded the contract as preferred supplier for the design, construction and installation of the high-voltage onshore substation. The work is to be carried out by the company's offshore competence centre in Ballerup, Denmark. Siemens Energy will begin design work at the onshore substation site in Lemvig municipality, followed by procurement of the main equipment and submission of permit applications. RWE expects to be able to start construction work on site in spring 2023.

HSM Offshore Energy has been selected as the preferred supplier for the design, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of the offshore high-voltage substation and its jacket foundation. The company, together with its engineering subcontractor Iv-Offshore & Energy, has already successfully delivered several offshore substations for Energinet in the Danish North Sea. For RWE's Thor substation and its foundation, HSM Offshore Energy has developed a highly efficient design to reduce the use of structural steel and the energy required in its manufacture. The installation of the jacket foundation in a water depth of up to 27 metres and the construction of the substation are expected to take place in 2025, with commissioning planned for 2026.

The Thor project will contribute to RWE's goal of increasing global company-owned offshore wind capacity from 3,000 MW to 8,000 MW (3 GW / 8 GW) by 2030.
