1.1 GW Seagreen: Scotland's Largest Offshore Wind Farm Enters Full Operations

Glasgow, Scotland - In Scotland, SSE Renewables and Total Energies have fully commissioned the 1.1 GW Seagreen offshore wind farm. All 114 Vestas V164-10.0 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 10 MW, are now producing electricity.

Seagreen is a joint venture between Total Energies (51%) and SSE Renewables (49%) and is located 27 km off the coast of Angus in the Firth of Forth in the North Sea. It is now Scotland's largest wind farm as well as the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, with its deepest foundation 58.7 metres below sea level. Seagreen is operated from a dedicated onshore operations and maintenance base in Montrose Harbour.

The 1,075 MW Seagreen offshore project produces enough renewable electricity to power nearly 1.6 million homes annually. This is equivalent to two-thirds of all Scottish households.

Seagreen was first granted exclusive development rights for the Firth of Forth Zone site by Crown Estate Scotland in 2010. Scottish Government ministers approved the development of the project in 2014 before construction began in June 2020. The first 10 MW Vestas turbine was installed in December 2021, with the final turbine then installed in early summer 2023, and the first wind power could be fed into the grid as early as August 2022.

Wind power from the 114 wind turbines will be transmitted from the North Sea site via three submarine cables to the landfall at Carnoustie and then via 19 km of underground cables to a new onshore substation at Tealing near Dundee before being distributed through the UK electricity grid. According to a PwC study, the project has provided an economic boost of over £1 billion during the construction phase and created around 4,000 jobs in Scotland.
