Momentum Picks Up: Australia Launches Tender 4 For 6,000 MW of Renewable Energy Projects

Canberra, Australia - By 2030, 82 percent of Australia's electricity is to come from renewable energy sources. The Australian government is relying on a comprehensive tendering system (Capacity Investment Scheme - CIS).

At the end of November, the Australian government published information on the upcoming Tender 4 for renewable energy projects. According to this, the tender for Phase A project bids is expected to open on December 13, 2024.

The total tendered capacity of the fourth round amounts to renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 6,000 MW (6 GW). Applicants have until February 18, 2025 to submit project bids for this tender.

The Australian state of New South Wales accounts for 2,200 MW (2.2 GW) of the total tender allocation. This is followed by the state of Victoria with 1,400 MW (1.4 GW), ahead of South Australia and Tasmania with 300 MW (0.3 GW) each. The remaining 1,800 MW (1.8 GW) has not yet been allocated to any state.

Final and complete tender information will be made available with the Tender Guidelines and the draft Capacity Investment Program Agreement when the tender for Phase A bids opens.

The tendering rounds are intended to accelerate investment in new renewable energies such as wind and solar energy and in clean, dispatchable capacities such as battery storage. In total, capacities with an output of 32 GW should be available by 2030 as part of the tenders.

The tendering rounds are intended to help reduce the pressure on electricity prices by building up renewable energy capacities. Furthermore, an impending reliability gap due to the ageing stock of coal-fired power plants is to be closed and the increasing demand for electricity is to be met.
