Statkraft Reaches Milestone in the United Kingdom: Statkraft and Emsys VPPFfocus on Flexibility with 300-MW Battery Storage System “Thurrock”
Oldenburg (Germany) / London (UK) - Statkraft, Europe’s largest producer of renewable energy, and Emsys VPP have reached a significant milestone in their collaboration with the successful grid connection of the 300-MW battery storage facility “Thurrock.”
By connecting to the virtual power plant, the battery storage system can participate simultaneously in the wholesale market and in balancing services—particularly Dynamic Services and the provision of reactive power. As a result, Thurrock contributes to frequency control, grid stabilization, and overall system flexibility, while also unlocking additional revenue potential.
“The successful connection of Thurrock highlights our capacity to deliver intricate storage solutions worldwide and assist our partners in optimizing their flexibility,” explains Dr. Ulrich Focken, Managing Director of Emsys VPP.
The project serves as a reference for integrating large-scale battery storage systems into modern electricity markets. It demonstrates how technological flexibility and intelligent marketing strategies can drive the decarbonization of power grids while creating economic value for operators.
