E.ON Strengthens Presence in United Kingdom: E.ON Plans Takeover of British Energy Supplier OVO Energy
Essen (Germany) / London (UK) – The energy group E.ON aims to significantly expand its position in the British energy market by acquiring the energy supplier OVO Energy. With the planned transaction, the number of E.ON customers in the United Kingdom will increase from around 5.6 million to approximately 9.6 million.
Marc Spieker, Chief Operating Officer Commercial at E.ON, described the United Kingdom as an important growth market for customer-oriented energy solutions. The planned acquisition of OVO would strengthen the retail customer business and underline the company’s ambition to support customers in the electrification and flexibilization of the energy system.
With a combined total of around seven million installed smart meters, E.ON and OVO digitally reach more than 60 percent of their British customer base, according to the companies. The experience and technologies gained from this are also expected to be transferred to Germany and continental Europe in the future.
The takeover is still subject to approval by the British competition authority Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Completion of the transaction is expected in the second half of 2026.
