UK Accelerates Offshore Expansion – RWE and SSE Receive Construction Approval for 1 GW North Falls Offshore Wind Farm
Swindon – The North Falls offshore wind project by energy companies RWE and SSE has received final development consent from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The companies announced that the consent covers the construction of up to 57 offshore wind turbines as well as the associated offshore infrastructure.
According to current plans, North Falls is expected to reach a total capacity of around 1 GW. Once operational, the wind farm could generate electricity for several hundred thousand UK households. The final project configuration will be defined in the next stage of planning.
The granted Development Consent Order (DCO) also permits the construction of up to two offshore substations, including their foundations. The project will now seek a long-term government Contract for Difference (CfD), which is intended to support the final investment decision.
With North Falls, RWE and SSE are further advancing offshore wind expansion in the United Kingdom. The UK remains one of the most important offshore wind markets globally.
