Juwi Reaches One-Gigawatt Construction Milestone in Global Wind and Solar Projects
Wörrstadt – The global expansion of wind and solar energy continues to gain momentum. Juwi, an internationally active developer, is involved in numerous projects across several continents and has now reached a notable milestone.
Wind Energy Drives German Business, PV Dominates Internationally
In Germany, wind energy remains the central revenue driver for the Juwi Group. At eleven sites in Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia, the company is currently building 46 wind turbines with a combined capacity of around 270 megawatts. Internationally, however, the focus lies on photovoltaics.
In Greece, Juwi is developing PV projects at seven sites with a combined capacity of more than 400 megawatts. These include the Trifylli solar park, located around 400 kilometers north of Athens, which is part of the "Clover" PV portfolio for investor Mirova. The cluster comprises four projects with a combined capacity of 156 megawatts, scheduled to come online by next year at the latest. During construction work in Greece, Juwi has repeatedly encountered historical findings, requiring flexible adjustments to plant planning.
On the African continent, the "Grande Cote Operation" PV-hybrid plant in Senegal is nearing completion. Around 100 kilometers northeast of Dakar, Juwi is building a 20.3-megawatt PV plant with an 11.12-megawatt battery storage system for mining and metals company Eramet. In South Africa, four PV projects with a combined capacity of around 350 megawatts are under construction in parallel.
Recent Project Completions in the United States and Italy
Beyond its current major construction sites, Juwi has also recently completed several projects. At the end of 2025, the company commissioned two large-scale PV projects in the United States: the 186-megawatt Axial Basin Solar project in Moffat County, Colorado, and the 141-megawatt Dolores Canyon Solar project in Dolores County.
In Italy, Juwi Energie Rinnovabili S.r.l. connected two larger solar parks to the grid last autumn: a 41.7-megawatt park in Sardinia and the Loreo solar park, located around 70 kilometers south of Venice. In Sardinia, archaeologists unexpectedly uncovered the remains of a settlement believed to be around 6,000 years old during construction work, including churches and graves. At the Loreo project, the main challenge was instead the soft, coastal marshland soil.
Complexity as Evidence of Capability
Juwi CEO Jost Backhaus sees the parallel execution of the company's numerous projects as evidence of its operational strength. “This once again demonstrates our planning and implementation expertise. Our implementation activities are currently in full swing,” said Jost Backhaus, CEO of Juwi. Regarding the particular challenges in Greece, he said: “This requires a high level of problem-solving expertise from our planning and implementation teams to minimize delays and constant adjustments to the plant configuration.”
The Juwi Group, headquartered in Wörrstadt near Mainz, has specialized for 30 years in the development, planning, construction and operational management of wind, solar and hybrid plants with storage systems. The company is part of Mannheim-based MVV Energie AG and employs around 1,300 people worldwide.
